Pen Company was established in Providence, RI in 1839, to manufacture the gold and silver casings for wooden pencils. This makes Cross Pens the oldest American
manufacturer of fine writing instruments. Cross Pen Company went on to make
many significant advances in the pen and pencil business, the first of which
was the creation of the fountain pen in 1889. Fast forward to the 1940’s when
Cross became well known for Corporate Gift personalization, which included
items like pens, pencils, letter openers and more.
Cross launched their first ballpoint pen in 1953 and went international in the 1970’s to Japan. Some of the most famous pens Cross manufactures are those in the Townsend and Century Collections. The newest Tech pens show that Cross still wants to be at the forefront of innovation in the fine writing instrument industry. Cross writing instruments are sold in 89 countries.
