Executive Essentials was founded in 1990. The idea of creating an upscale boutique devoted almost entirely to fine writing instruments (aka: pens and pencils) was a dream of one of our owners. What began as a dream finally became a reality after years of planning and preparation. The site was chosen, the store was launched and over the years Executive Essentials built a successful following. And, of course, with the success of the first Executive Essentials retail store, came the natural progression to the Internet with the launch of www.ExecutiveEssentials.com.

Over these many years, we’ve learned that pen collectors are sentimental and enthusiastic about their hobby and passion for pens. However, the reality of survival in this economy is that being sentimental and enthused doesn’t necessarily lead to financial success. And, to compete for the mall traffic at the Woodfield Mall (think Disneyworld for shoppers) is very difficult. So, the ‘fine writing instruments’ offering was rapidly expanded to include many high-end executive personal and desk accessories. The complement of beautiful business accessories, such as: leather letter trays from Bosca and leather prescription pads from Hartmann and even leather desk pads from Bey Burke were added to the fine array of fountain pens, rollerball pens, ballpoint pens and mechanical pencils.

Executive Essentials offered a wide assortment of products to appeal to a vast array of writing enthusiasts. Whether you want Yard-O-Led and their exquisite mechanical pencils; or Waterman Exception or the Waterman Carene; perhaps you prefer Parker Premier or the Parker Sonnet collection; opt for Montblanc and their exquisite LeGrand or Meisterstuck, or long for Lamy, Executive Essentials offered something for everyone’s taste. Yet, doing business as a retail store in this economy is difficult. Executive Essentials closed its doors on Sunday. And, with it went the hope and dream of a few visionaries as well as numerous fine writing pen devotees. The bigger demand seems to be on the Internet, where between Amazon, Ebay and the Executive Essentials site, we sell far more. Yet on the Internet, it’s hard to view the intricacies of a fine pen; feel the fine grain of a Nappa leather on a writing pad; or see the beautiful ruby gemstone on the Montblanc Boheme Rouge. Looking on the vast array of fine business accessories on the Internet, you have to be careful of the ones that are called ‘synthetic’ leather. Newsflash: it’s either leather, or its not.

The hope is, that the loyal customer base will continue to shop online. The reality is that unless you are truly in the face of the customers, they tend to forget. And, until the economy turns around, fine stores like Executive Essentials will simply disappear.]]> 2/3/2010 http://www.executiveessentials.com/blog/?view=plink&id=47 47 <![CDATA[Fountain Pens]]> Fountain pens have an interesting history and are still used today by many. With all the modern writing instruments available certain individuals still choose to write with fountain pens.  Whether they are successful executives, accomplished artists or just common men, these  scribes continue to drive the demand. 

Maybe it is the history behind the fountain pen?  Fountain pen users may feel similar to the people who buy old houses or collect antiques; they find value in something that has a little history. 

Maybe these enthusiasts feel more tied to the people who came before them. Maybe they feel more connected to Thomas Jefferson, the very important figure of American history and the fountain pen. Thomas Jefferson, the man whose writings were critical to our independence and the man who may have been the catalyst for the invention of the first modern fountain pen.  It was he who complained to the young inventor John Isaac Hawkins about the cumbersomeness of quills. Mr. Hawkins went on to patent one of the first mechanical pencils and a type of fountain pen that replaced the awkward quills of Jefferson's era. Unfortunately Jefferson died before he could use Hawkins' invention; however Mr. Jefferson was able to hire a watchmaker who came up with something a little more useful and less messy for Thomas to use, a silver dip pen.

Maybe because fountain pens are less common, they make the people who use them feel less common. I used to be in the world of finance and one of my fellow analysts on LaSalle Street, Jack,  used fountain pens.  Both of us just being out of college could not demand the highest salaries.  Nevertheless as soon as we received our meager paychecks, Jack would head off to the pen store.  He was like a young kid in a candy store; Montblanc, Waterman, Montegrappa, Dunhill, you name it Jack had to have it.  Jack gave up many other basic things just to own those cherished pens; I really didn’t understand  it but boy did they bring happiness to Jack! He loved to show them off around the department to all of us "Bic" users.

I grew up in an Irish neighborhood, Beverly, with its many Irish pubs, dance studios, imports stores and the sounds of the famous Chicago Stock Yard Kilty band every March.  I was given different versions of the classic Irish wool sweater, the Aran, multiple times since birth which of course the color did nothing to enhance my white, freckly Irish skin. My father loved Notre Dame, this Irish man’s version of heaven in the Midwest, where we trekked, football season after football season, through the icy tundra of South Bend to witness the fighting Irish on the playing field. I wore Claddagh rings, plaid skirts and lots of green clothing. I listened to "The Southside Irish" and “The ND Fight Song” more times than I care to remember. 

Don’t get me wrong I am very proud of my Irish heritage, it is who I am; it is huge part of the family I love and it is what keeps alive my beloved father’s spirit, whom I miss desperately, since he left this world a few years ago to join his holy Father in heaven.  That is why it is always a pleasure and a privilege when I am given the task of writing about Waterford pens.

I grew up in Chicago and throughout my childhood I spent many hours in these fine establishments: The Field Museum of Natural History, The Adler Planetarium & Astronomy Museum, and The Art Institute.  I have also been lucky enough to travel the world and see other museums: The Vatican Museums, the Louvre Museum, the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities in Cairo, The Tate Museum and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. 

I love museums, I love the long dimly lit hallways, the smells, the massive amount of objects found. I love the buzz felt by the crowd as they take in the beauty and a part of their past! However, when I have visited these monstrous structures, throughout my life, I have taken them for granted.  As I walked down aisle after aisle, year after year, I failed to appreciate all the efforts of the many amazing people who made these wonderful institutions possible!

Take for instance one of my favorites, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, also known as the Met. “The Metropolitan Museum of Art was founded in 1870 by a group of American citizens – businessmen and financiers as well as leading artists and thinkers of the day – who wanted to create a museum to bring art and art education to the American people.” …..How great were these people!  These and many other individuals responsible for the magnificent museums all over the world today, who had the foresight and vision to create such wonderful institutions in which generation upon generation of world citizens could enjoy the treasures accumulated over thousands of years of the earth's existence. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, started by a handful of clever people, has turned into one of the finest museums in the world with over “two million works of art spanning 5,000 years of world culture”.

Now the tough part, how to accomplish this?  I’ve tried several things: yoga and meditation, walking, gardening, spending time with my children, friends, my husband (ok this may actually cause stress), exercising, reading and getting a good night's sleep.  I’ve tried them all.  What I’ve learned from my many previous attempts is, while all these things help, the best way to to de-stress,  is to get organized and simplify your life.

How to do this?: Buy a calendar or a planner or a diary. Use a personal agenda to keep track of all your important appointments; write everything down in a personal planner; make your lists in a personal planner; carry your personal planner calendar or agenda with you wherever you go, so you know where, when and how your day is going. You’ll have everything you need in one diary, a 2010 planner that will be your constant companion.  Believe me, this really helps.  Your work schedule, your family schedule, important phone numbers, important dates….everything you need in one handy personal planner.

Some people swear by the electronic version, not me.  I want something that I can depend on at all times. Something  I do not have to back up every night, charge every morning or worry where a cell tower is, in order for this device to work! Most importantly I want something that doesn't act as a vehicle people use to reach me 24 hours a day, 365 days a year! (Another reason we are all so stressed out....we can never escape the madness!)

Who collects these wide assortment of writing instruments and where do these collectors get their information and how do they spend their time? Now that I am submerged into the world of pens I’m kind of flabbergasted by the vast amount of ballpoints, rollerballs, fountain, felt-tip, erasable and limited edition pens available and the prices some people will pay to get these very coveted objects!

First I'm curious to know who these people are!   Do they have a particular kind of personality?  Do they come from similar backgrounds?  I myself do not collect a thing. My mother was a depression child,  so she has a hard time throwing anything away…. as a result, in my household now that I'm all grown up,  you better not set anything down for too long or it will end up in a bag headed for Goodwill or some other charitable organization.

After doing a little research I'm finding pen collectors do not really stand out as any one particular personality type, in truth, I really cannot get a good answer about who these mysterious people are and why they like pens so much. From what I can gather,  pen collectors come from all different walks of life, have all different types of personalities and are scattered all around the world!  Interestingly enough, I did come across a woman in Germany, Angelika Unverhau, the world record holder for ballpoint pens…. 220,000 ballpoints from over 146 countries!  Now that would be an interesting household to grow up in.  I wonder what affect she's having on her kids?

Where do pen collectors gather their information and how do they spend their time?  I typed “books about pens” in Google and I got over twelve million results. Some pen collectors feel Fischler & Schneider’s books are a must; others are big fans of Paul Erano. There really is an enormous selection of books to choose from.  You can also go to your local library and find volume upon volume at your fingertips.

With the emergence of the electronic age you think you would be hard pressed to find a pen show; not the case, you can still attend pen shows all over the world....from Chicago to London to New York and beyond.   There are vast numbers of pen online forums, clubs and trading sites as well.  “One of the oldest human rights organization and oldest international literary organization in the world, International PEN, founded in 1921 in London,” is still going strong!

President Washington set the standards for all who followed by his wise and honorable leadership and unwavering devotion to the American people and the principles of the Constitution. “

One in particular stands out in my mind, one that I read over and over in one form or another, Tarzan.



To this day, Tarzan is still both my son’s favorite literary character and my guess is they are not alone. Walking down the street you would be hard pressed to find anyone that wasn’t intimately familiar with this legendary “ape man”. 

Hollywood capitalized on the impact Tarzan had with the common man, according to Wikipedia over 89 movies with Tarzan in the title were made between 1918 and 2008.   Some of these movies were well done, others not so....however, in my opinion, no cinematic recreation could replace the excitement my boys and I felt, while entrenched in the jungle of our mind, reading the classic novel Tarzan of the Apes,  by Edgar Rice Burroughs. 


To honor this great fictional writer, who went on to write over two dozen Tarzan books, Krone has created a superb handcrafted writing instrument called The Krone Edgar Rice Burrough’s Tarzan pen.

Our teacher asked that when we were to go trick-or-treating to also bring that small orange rectangular box with us and ask for money to donate to UNICEF.
        
Halloween donations are not the only revenue source for UNICEF; there are many corporate philanthropic gestures. Buying a backpack is always an adventure at our house. Despite the quality of The North Face backpacks (the brand my kids typically prefer), the children seem to want a new school backpack every year anyway, even though last year’s backpack is still good and the fact that The North Face backpacks carry a lifetime warranty.  The major factor in the yearly backpack purchase is quite simply color and style. The words ‘Oh Mom, that’s so last year’ still ring in my head. So, what’s this year’s favorite? 



The middle school kid, soon to be an 8th grader, is actually leaning away from the traditional school backpack … he thinks it would be ‘way cool’ to carry a messenger bag for all his school stuff. The kid’s school actually provides a tablet computer with all the text books pre-loaded, so he really just needs enough space for the computer and his miscellaneous school supplies, aka: his junk.  As an alternative, he’s also thinking about Timbuk2. The other middle school kid, a daughter going into 6th grade, has clearly become very fashion conscious. Last year’s choice was the empire blue North Face Slingshot backpack… largely because it had cool places to put her water bottle. This year’s choice, for the discriminating daughter, appears to be another North Face backpack…the North Face Recon backpack. Fortunately, there are eight colors to choose from, and I’m guessing (given the teenage mood lately) that we’ll opt for a darker color.  No more pink backpack… at least not in the foreseeable future.  I was actually hoping she’d pick one of the hugely popular Jansport Superbreak backpacks or the Jansport Big Student backpack. No luck, though. Too colorful I guess.






Last but not least… the youngest kid. He’s wheeled around his favorite backpack so much in the past year, that the bottom had to be replaced by the Irv’s Luggage Repair guys. It actually wore off. His choice last year was the High Sierra Oversteer backpack with wheels. Now, let’s remember that as a grade schooler, he basically wheeled his lunch to school… and that’s it. However, for the occasional time that he actually needed a wheeled backpack for books, it was the perfect choice. He’s not into color, style or brand… the kid is about as plain as unlined paper, so I’m guessing he’ll stay with his favorite High Sierra wheeled backpack for next year.




Interestingly, leather backpacks have made their way into the corporate mainstream. On the train home from work last night, I noticed how many backpacks there are being carried by adults… they seem to have replaced the mainstream and traditional briefcases. Backpacks and messenger bags seem to now be the new trend in business fashion. My personal favorite is the Clava Leather mid-sized backpack. It is the perfect size, has lots of pockets and is a beautiful leather bag. I do like the look of the Piel Leather Moon-shaped backpack. It looks remarkably comfortable.  Of course there are lots of executive type backpacks… Acegene and Tumi offer wonderful business backpacks for the business executive. They are stylish computer backpacks and a perfect alternative to the traditional business case.

In second grade, the children are still excited about school and really excited to give their teacher an end-of-the year teacher gift. Not so, for the older grades… the thrill wears off very quickly.


There is nothing like looking into the smiling and anxious face of a seven year old as I open their treasured gift. Their eyes light up with pride as I hold my new gift and praise it as the most unique and wonderful gift. Pride, warmth, excitement and sheer pleasure are evident on their happy little faces. It warms my heart each and every time.


I’m grateful for every gift that I get. Some gifts are personal, some are home made, some are ‘dust collectors’, some are fun and some are very useful. I don’t teach just so that I can get gifts - the trade off isn’t worth it; I teach because I love learning and creating the love of learning in the children. There is nothing better than seeing a child’s eyes light up when something about the lesson suddenly clicks in their head. I teach for those moments of excitement when a child starts to read independently and loves the new-found freedom and adventure in books.


So here is a teacher gift that made me laugh and is fun for the kids too. The Acme Crayon Rollerball. Ok, so it’s silly, but the second graders still use crayons and to see their teacher using a ‘crayon’ is still funny for them.  Over the last few years, I’ve accumulated several different colors of these fun rollerballs: red, blue and yellow. So, while my kids are coloring, so am I.  The job of teacher will never rank in the hierarchy of corporate or financial success, but it’s a job that I love and treasure. Back to using my ‘crayon’ rollerball, as I still have papers to grade.

Year after year I have looked with envy at the Montblanc limited editions. Ok, call me clueless as it’s taken me a while but I’ve finally realized that there is a pattern to the Montblanc limited editions. Each year there are at least two new limited editions pens, or ‘Montblanc fine writing instruments’ as they like to be called. There is the Writer’s Edition to celebrate one great author from world literature and a Patron of the Art’s edition “to celebrate the past and present patrons of the arts”.
This year’s Montblanc Patron of the Arts edition is the Max von Oppenheim fountain pen. Not familiar? Actually, my school history lessons leave me a little shy on this one, too. 
Who is Max von Oppenheim?  According to Montblanc, Oppenheim was chosen “in honour of a wayfarer between Europe and the East”.  Oppenheim was an archaeologist from the late 1890s who is credited with discovering ancient civilizations. “During the course of the 30-year excavation he uncovered extensive evidence from the prehistoric Halaf culture, together with many relics and artifacts from the peak of the Aramaic-Assyrian civilization. His most important finds include carved stone sculptures and panels from the 9th century B.C. and coloured ceramics from the 6th century B.C. In 1930, he “opened up these treasures to the public in the Tell Halaf Museum which he founded in Berlin”.
Enough about Max. The Montblanc Oppenheimer is gorgeous. “Pale grey lacquer inlays on the 925 Sterling Silver case recall the decoration and frescoes of the Middle East. The special shape of the writing instrument is based on the domes of Eastern Mosques, while the platinum plated rings are embellished with designs and reliefs from Tell Halaf”.
Looking at the 18k gold nib, though, is what really defines this Montblanc fountain pen. On the nib is a finely engraved Bedouin motif, dedicated to the archaeological exploration of the Middle East.
So that’s the history on this year’s Montblanc limited edition. The Montblanc Oppenheim is a wonderful addition to the Montblanc pens and a little insight into a patron of culture and discovery. Wonder who Montblanc will choose for the writer’s edition this year.

Ok, so you’ve seen the cheesy-looking memorabilia for Elvis. There are plates, wall hangings, velvet pictures, pillows, key chains…the list goes on and on. The ‘best’ Elvis souvenir that I’ve seen is the Elvis clock, where the pendulum is shaped as Elvis hips, and swings back and forth. So much for good taste. 


I’m shocked sometimes at the King’s continued resiliency and popularity - almost  32 years after his death. Even the kids of today like Elvis. I see several of the King’s songs in my kid’s playlist, right along side Lady Gaga, Akon, Flo Rida, and Pussycat Dolls. Elvis I get, the others… not so much.


To honor of Elvis, Acme Studios has created a collection of Limited Edition Elvis rollerball pens. These five pens are part of Acme’s Americana collection, a tribute to American pop culture icons. And, there is no bigger pop icon than Elvis. According to Acme, these pen collections are to commemorate the artistic achievements of the 20th century's greatest contemporary artists, architects and designers. Ok, that being said, these Elvis pens are just fun. The five styles honor Elvis in some of his most memorable times: Elvis on Sullivan, Jailhouse Rock and Blue Suede Shoes. And, these are great, dependable rollerball pens.


Acme Studios makes fine pens in honor of all types of artistic achievement as well as achievements in science and design. My personal favorite is the Jazz pen. The hubby likes the blueprint rollerball (he’s in construction). The kids like the Homer Simpson pens, but until they get jobs, the Homer pens are not in their future.


Wonder how long it will be until we see an Akon collection, or Flo Rida? My suggestion…don’t hold your breath.

My kid probably spends more time texting on his IpodTouch than actually writing out his homework. Yet, in this techno jungle that we live in, there still is need for a good pen. That’s where Fisher Space Pens come in. 



Between my own frustrations trying to write sales orders at all sorts of angles and watching my son struggle while doing his homework at odd positions (who knew that a pen just won’t work, if it was writing upside-down?)  we’ve gone through a lot of good pens that simply don’t work for us. Now, with graduation on the horizon, I’m actually expected to purchase a graduation gift for the kid too!  Wow, like $128,635.48 isn’t enough… but who’s counting. I thought about laminating all the checks I’ve written and framing them… that would be remembered and certainly unique. However, the bank now only sends those blasted Xerox pages with copies of my hard-earned checks. Xerox copies on the living room wall might not go with the décor- even if it is framed.  With only weeks to go, it’s a challenge.
